What is a pack battle?

Updated November 5, 2026

A pack battle is a simple game: two collectors open booster packs of the same trading card expansion and compare what they pull. The pack with the better cards wins. The format became popular with collectors and video creators because it takes the oldest moment in the hobby, the reveal, and gives it stakes.

The basic rules

Two players, one expansion. Each player opens a sealed booster pack and reveals the cards. Then the cards are compared. The question is what counts as better, and that is what the scoring rule decides.

In a casual battle, players just compare the best card. In a structured battle, every card has a value and the totals are compared. Online Pack Battle uses the second approach so that one lucky hit is not the only thing that matters.

How scoring works here

On Online Pack Battle every card scores points based on its rarity. Common cards are worth very little, and the rarest cards, such as special illustration rares or hyper rares, are worth far more. The pack that adds up to more points wins.

The points follow how hard each rarity is to pull, so a rare hit is worth roughly what it takes to find it. Prices of cards on the market play no part in the score.

Why they are fun to watch

Part of the appeal is the shared suspense. The reveal order, the near misses and the one-in-a-hundred hits make for good moments, and being able to see someone else's pack at the same time makes your own pull more exciting.

That is also why live opening matters: a pack battle only works if both openings are real. A unique code on screen during the recording shows the opening is happening live.

Pack battle versus a normal unboxing

In a normal unboxing you open packs alone and decide for yourself how it went. In a pack battle there is a rival, a clear winner and a ranking. It also gives a reason to open a pack from the expansion you were curious about instead of just letting it sit on a shelf.

It is not gambling: you only open packs you already own, and there are no entry fees or bets on Online Pack Battle.

Playing one online

You do not need a stream or a studio. Choose an expansion, get matched with a rival of a similar level or invite a friend with a link, and open your pack on camera in the browser. Your cards are recognised automatically and the score is shown at the end.

If you want the full walkthrough, read the guide on how to open packs online and compete. If you are choosing what to open, browse the expansions and look at their card lists and most valuable cards first.

Who pack battles are for

Pack battles suit collectors who enjoy the reveal more than the spreadsheet: people with a few packs on a shelf, friends who want a quick duel, and creators who want a format with a clear winner. You do not need to know the whole card pool to take part.

If you are new to trading cards, start with an expansion you like the look of, read its card list so you know the rarities, and open your first pack with a friend. The pull rates pages show how rare the big hits are, so a quiet duel is never a surprise.
